The amount of traffic you get to your website depends upon the keywords that search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing use to rank your site. Why is this?
If you’re ranked on the #1 spot on Google, you’ll generally get 30-40% of the traffic coming to that search result page. The second spot gets about 12%, the third 10% and so on until the lowly 10th spot only gets about 1% of the traffic. What a bummer – you’re on the first page of Google, and you only get one visitor out of 100!! That would really suck if your storefront did that kind of business. Obviously, you can see why it’s important to be ranked as close to #1 as possible.
What’s a keyword or keyword phrase? That’s what someone would type in to a search engine to find your business – for example “salon in Truckee, CA” or “best restaurant in Tahoe City” etc.
So, what are some of the key factors that Google would use to rank your site?
- Your domain name or URL. That’s why you’ll see some of my clients having domain names like www.losangelesrestaurantconsultant.com or www.sugarbowlskipatrol.com – that’s what people would type in to a search engine to find them – brilliant! Ask me how you can do this, yet keep your business name domain …
- Title meta tag – the words that appear in the little tab above your browser if you scroll your mouse over the tab – go ahead – try it on this site. This is also what’s seen in the blue underline text on Google search results.
- Description meta tag – a compelling interesting description of your site. It’s good to include keyword phrases here too.
- Keywords meta tags aren’t as important as they used to be, but still a good idea to use them.
- The number and quality of backlinks to your site. If a site with a high Google page rank (a logarithmic scale from 0-10) has a link to your website, it appears that you have more credibility.
- DMOZ – an open directory project – click on the link to see what this is about.
- Meta tags on picture, videos.
- Keywords interspersed in your content – your favorite Truckee Web Developer does a good job of this.
- Anchor text links – see #8 for an example.
