Tips for Web Hosting Accounts and Buying Domains
Before you go out and buy a domain name or purchase web hosting, please read my article: Why is Keyword Research and Competition Analysis Vital to Online Business?
What is a domain name or URL?
A domain name is simply an address that identifies your website on the world wide web. Examples include www.TruckeeWebDesign.com or www.SummitBusinessMarketing.com. A URL [Uniform (or Universal) Resource Locator] is another name for domain and is also an address identifier.
Where is the best place for you to buy a domain or hosting?
Godaddy.com is the most popular place to buy domains. I have used their site often to do research and find keyword rich domains for my clients (and myself). Their domain auction section (for members only) has a feature where you can look for domains that already have traffic, older domains (good for SEO [Search Engine Optimization]).
I’m not a big fan of Godaddy for web hosting. Their site navigation is not intuitive and customer support can take quite a while to resolve issues.
What should you look for in a web host? Here are what you might consider to be the non-negotiables:
After considering all these variables, my recommendation for hosting a website is hostmonster.com … I’ve found them to be very affordable – about $6 a month and your first domain is free, their support line picks up in less than a minute, and they have been able to answer every question I have had. Their memory capacity is great – I’ve done lots of sites with many photos and videos with no problems, and their software cpanel is comprehensive and compatible.
